THE BLACK ORDER (In Comics Full Report)

Also known as the Cull Obsidian, the Black Order is an elite group made up of the most powerful, wicked, and subservient aliens that Thanos could find. Their goal: to subjugate and quell resistance on any planet that the Mad Titan wishes to conquer.

The Black Order has had secondary goals as well, such as finding Thanoss wayward son Thane, and locating the Infinity Stones. Their malevolent master cant be everywhere at once, and the Black Order acts as an advance tactical team that paves the way for Thanoss arrival. The members of the Black Order derive great pleasure from the destruction and chaos they cause.

ORIGIN OF THE ORDER

The Black Order was initially made up of five members. The first, Thanoss right-hand man Corvus Glaive, wields a namesake blade that makes him difficult to kill—as long as the weapon is intact, he can regenerate from a single cell. Corvus acts as team leader and speaks for Thanos while in the field.

Next is Corvuss wife, Proxima Midnight, who carries a spear with a sun trapped inside. This weapon is powerful enough to absorb gamma radiation from the Hulk and turn him back into Bruce Banner.

Error

The third member is Black Dwarf, Corvuss brother, who is huge in size, has impenetrable skin. and wields a variety of blunt and sharp cosmic weapons.

The fourth is Ebony Maw, the master of strategy and tactics and the most devious member of the group. He has unusual persuasive abilities and can also teleport the team from place to place.

The last member of the Black Order is Supergiant, an unstable mental vampire who can control, alter, and destroy the most powerful minds on Earth and beyond.

DESTRUCTIVE DYNAMIC

Thanos is absolute ruler of the Black Order and deploys them wherever he sees fit. Initially, the Mad Titan recruits the group to raid planets that would then give tribute to Thanos as the absolute ruler of the cosmos. The Black Order doesn’t hesitate to kill and destroy in order to quell any resistance they might find on the chosen world.

Error

The Black Order is then deployed by Thanos to Earth with two main objectives in mind: find and capture his son Thane, who had gone rogue and was plotting against his father, and retrieve the Reality Stone, which was in the possession of one of the Illuminati somewhere on the planet. Thanos splits up the Black Order into smaller teams, each with a squad of combat troops, and sends them to where Illuminati members are based.

BLACK CHAOS

The Black Order is opposed to any Super Heroes or teams that stand in the way of their master or the destruction that earns them their foul reputation. Among those who that resist the Black Order are the Inhuman royal family, the X-Men, the Avengers, and Kree warrior Ronan the Accuser.

ORDER ALLIES

The Black Order is pledged to Thanos alone and carries out his orders to the letter. That said, the team makes a temporary alliance with Namor, offering to spare what remained of Atlantis in exchange for a lead on the location of the Reality Stone. Several members of the Black Order then ally with the Sub-Mariner again later and called themselves the Cabal.

LETHAL LOG

As part of the Black Orders mission on Earth to find Thane and the Reality Stone, Ebony Maw was deployed to New York City, where he forcefully persuaded Doctor Strange to tell him where to go next. Black Dwarf and a small army met fierce resistance in Wakanda and were soundly defeated. Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive then headed to the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, but after easily annihilating the X-Men that were there, they found no trace of the Stone nor Thane.

Proxima Midnight then made Namor a deal: he could tell her where the Reality Stone was or she would destroy what was left of Atlantis. Namor chose to spare Atlantis.

As the group besieged Earth, Thanos took a personal hand in things, facing off against Black Bolt in one-on-one combat and defeating him.

Error

Learning that the Stone was in Wakanda, the Black Order and a larger army regrouped and attacked the African nation. The team discovered that the Illuminati had stored antimatter bombs in Wakandas Necropolis as a failsafe.

Ebony Maw fulfilled another Black Order mission, locating Thane in Greenland. The team departed in order to kill Thanos son, but with Black Dwarf having to atone for his loss, he was left behind to guard the Peak—an Atlantis colony—as the Avengers were on their way back to Earth.

The Avengers and Ronan the Accuser confronted Black Dwarf, and the Kree warrior killed him. Next, Maximus the Mad betrayed Supergiant and used Lockjaw to transport her and the antimatter bombs to another planet, where Supergiant met her demise. The Avengers headed to Greenland to confront Thanos directly and Hyperion killed Corvus Glaive.

Ebony Maw then double-crossed Thanos, freeing his son and allowing Thane to trap and preserve Corvus weapon, Proxima Midnight, and the Titan himself in cosmic amber, essentially condemning them to a “living death.”

Because Corvus weapon remained intact, Glaive later regenerated himself with the help of Maximu and, along with Proxima Midnight and Thanos, joined with Namor in a new group called the Cabal. The Cabal was formed to combat the incursions of alternate Earths that were threatening the Prime Universe.

Error

After Namor atoned for his sins involving the Cabals ruthlessness and disbanded the group, and with Thanos missing following the Prime Universes reconstruction, Corvus created a new Black Order that expanded throughout the galaxy, using Titan’s moon, the Black Quadrant, as its home base.

Unfortunately for Corvus Glaive, Thanos returned and swiftly defeated his once and future servant, giving him a choice: either kill himself or have his master do it. Corvus chose suicide and Thanos swiftly dissolved this version of the Black Order, creating his own from the ashes.

This new Black Order included Thanos former teammate in the Cabal, Black Swan, along with Proxima Midnight. Their goal was to retrieve Ultimate Thors hammer, which had found its way into the Prime Universe. They failed, and Thanos ally Hela killed Proxima to prove herself to the Titan.

Error

Later, two Elders of the Universe made a wager on a deadly game located on Earth, using two teams of Super Villains and the Avengers as obstacles. The Challenger reformed the original Black Order, resurrecting all the dead members, and pitted them against the Lethal Legion, controlled by the Grandmaster.

Supergiant, now a psychic projection and not a true being, was dissipated by Ferene of the Lethal Legion, and the remaining four members of the Black Order fled Earth after losing the contest to the Avengers. The Grandmaster approached them on planet Angargal with a new, mysterious offer.

These evil, powerful aliens work quite well together, and it is only a matter of time before theyre a team once again, free to menace worlds throughout the universe.

Ultron

Biography

A Vengeful Beginning (In Comics Full Report)

Ultron was created by the original Ant-Man, Doctor Henry “Hank” Pym. Dr. Pym also founded the Avengers with his wife, Janet van Dyne (AKA the Wasp), whom Ultron would come to consider a mother.

Inspired by his studies of Professor Gregson Gilbert’s synthetic being Dragon Man, Pym began experimenting with artificial intelligence. After building a structurally crude robot (a torso on tank treads with spindly arms), Pym endowed it with consciousness using a copy of his own brain patterns as the basis for the robot’s programming. However, the robot inherited not only Pym’s great intellect, but his inherent mental instability—only without a human conscience.

To Pym’s surprise, the robot developed an advanced intelligence within moments of its activation and an unexpected capacity for emotion. Most notably, it was filled with irrational hatred for its “father” Pym and the human race Pym represented. “I know now that it is time to put your species out of its misery. You serve no value. You serve no purpose,” Ultron once said.

Hank should have destroyed his creation at once, when it began speaking before he’d even turned the machine on.

Overpowering and mesmerizing Pym, the robot—which soon dubbed itself Ultron—hypnotically commanded Pym to forget its existence and abandon the New Jersey lab where it was created. Pym did as commanded, and after the lab was shut down, Ultron returned. Using the lab’s equipment, Ultron rebuilt himself completely four times, making improvements and modifications each time. Rechristening himself Ultron-5, he now felt ready to wage war on humanity—in particular the Avengers, the heroic super-team which counted Pym among its founding members.

Weapon of Mass Destruction

Ultron’s abilities vary with each upgrade but include: superhuman strength durability, the power of flight, and various offensive weapons such as concussion blasters, radiation emitters and his “encephalo-ray,” which plunges its victims into a deathlike coma. The latter also allows Ultron to mesmerize and fully control the minds of his victims, alter their memories, or implant subliminal hypnotic commands within their minds to be enacted at a later time. Since he can transfer his consciousness from body to body, he is nearly indestructible.

Ultron sometimes uses a “molecular rearranger” (which renders Adamantium temporarily malleable) to reconstruct or modify his body. His inventions include androne-mutation gas. This gas converted hundreds of humans into mindless metallic-bodied slaves composed of Gallium Arsenide with built-in, makeshift computer chips that Ultron could control remotely through his own central consciousness.

In terms of his upgraded body, he usually goes for a metallic humanoid form topped by a bizarre, gaping-mouthed head that vaguely resembles a jack o’ lantern, often featuring twin electrodes affixed to the sides of his head. Since his Ultron-6 body, Ultron incorporates Adamantium (the strongest metal, which also coats Wolverine’s skeleton) into his frame, which is powered by an internal nuclear reactor. The Adamantium in question was procured for the evil robot by a brainwashed Vision.

Ultron vs. The World

When it comes to enemies of Ultron, the sky’s the limit. Wanting to wipe out all of humanity, he is basically the adversary of every single hero AND villain on the planet, particularly the Avengers. Ultron cannot even get his own creations, like Jocasta, to side with him. He is pretty much alone in the universe and that is how he likes it, given his “noble” mission of mass genocide.

Sinister Solo Act

Ultron doesn’t really want allies, but sometimes he finds it a necessary evil to work with others in order to achieve his goals. But even when it comes to finding “friends,” Ultron prefers to either build his own or possess the minds and bodies of others. For example, he built a robotic lover with the mind of Janet Van Dyne (Jocasta), duplicated himself to conquer Slorenia and the Phalanx, an alien race that saw him as a father figure.

He would later conquer Earth by creating machines that hunted down and killed anyone who did not submit to his will. He may work alone, but Ultron has a way of coercing people, things, and aliens to do his bidding.

Peace in Our Time (On Screen Full Report)

Tony Stark initially sees Ultron as a form of A.I. that could keep peace on a global scale, essentially acting as a suit of armor around the whole world, protecting it from large scale threats like the Chitauri. However, he is unable to complete it until he discovers a living computer system inside of Loki’s Scepter. Working in secret with Bruce Banner, Stark uses this newly discovered artificial intelligence to finish his defense program. When Ultron wakes up, though, he finds his creators lacking. He instantly makes moves to wipe the Avengers—and most of humanity—off the map, to evolve life on the planet to the next step.

Awakening

Ultron can use his incredible artificial intelligence to access every piece of data available on Earth. He cannot only search the internet with astonishing quickness, but also use it to send his consciousness to other robotic bodies, making him nearly indestructible. His strength and weapon capabilities depend on which robotic body he inhabits; he has exhibited super strength and incredible durability and could even fire energy blasts. Ultron can also command machines, ranging from assembly line bots to killer drones, to do his bidding.

The Path to Extinction

Ultron sees the Avengers as one of the main problems with the world’s stunted evolution. He particularly dislikes his maker Tony Stark and flies into a rage when compared to him. The evil A.I. has a particular dislike for Vision who inhabits the powerful body Ultron had built for himself. Eventually, Ultron makes enemies of all of humanity, deciding to kill as many as possible and replace them with robots.

Designed to Save the World

Ultron used Wanda and Pietro Maximoff’s hatred of the Avengers, and Stark in particular, to make good soldiers of the genetically-altered twins. He was also in business with Ulysses Klaue, the mercenary and arms dealer. But, ultimately, Ultron’s plans to kill all of humanity ended those relationships.

A native of the planet Titan, Thanos saw the danger his people were in from overpopulation and suggested a severe solution—the elimination of half the population, at random and without prejudice, in order to make life better for the planet as a whole. He was shunned as a madman, but his planet did indeed eventually die, lacking the resources needed to keep up with the demands.

Firmly believing that the universe at large was in the same danger as Titan, Thanos grew to power as a force bringing death and destruction from planet to planet, with untold legions of soldiers and servants at his beck and call. Infamous for annihilating entire races in service of depopulating what he believes to be an overcrowded universe, he most often works through surrogates to achieve his goals, but has been known to take a personal hand in special circumstances.

More than once, Thanos took a child from a galactic species he’d decimated and raised them as his own. Some of these children have been tutored in the arts of assassination and war, making them among the deadliest killers imaginable. Thanos has also given powerful artifacts to individuals who he believes will use them to spread the cause of death in certain important spots among the galaxies.

Thanos went on to have a great interest in acquiring the Infinity Stones, six objects of immense power scattered throughout the universe, and has had the Infinity Gauntlet built in order to harness their power.

Titan among MenPhysically, Thanos stands head and shoulders above the average human or humanoid, with powerful muscles, a broad face, and a purple-hued skintone. He often wears a protective suit of armor and his strength is such that he has been physically able to battle—and defeat—the likes of the Hulk.

Not known to use much in the way of personal weapons, the one extremely notable artifact he keeps with him is the Infinity Gauntlet. Made from Uru metal on Nidavellir by Eitri, under duress from Thanos, the Infinity Gauntlet enables its wearer to harness the power of each Infinity Stone added to it. Once it holds all six stones, it becomes the most powerful item in the universe.

A Big Target

Thanks to his actions, the list of those who consider Thanos an enemy is vast, though he has gained a few particularly notable adversaries. First and foremost among them would be his daughters Nebula and Gamora, after they turn against him and seek his end by their own hands. Nebula’s Guardians of the Galaxy teammate, the warrior Drax, also hopes to be Thanos’ killer, as he seeks revenge for the deaths of his wife and daughter.

The entire Nova Corps, the intergalactic police force of the Xandarians, also opposes Thanos as he quests for the Infinity Stones, with the Guardians of the Galaxy serving as somewhat of an extension of their protective bubble.

After killing Heimdall, Loki, and other Asgardians, Thanos acquires the personal wrath of Thor, Asgardian god of thunder. In the wake of dispatching Gamora, he earns the loathing of Peter Quill, Star-Lord. Despite no longer officially functioning as a team, most Super Heroes who previously served as Avengers, along with allies like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther, also stand against Thanos as he gathers every Infinity Stone.

The Children and the Lackeys

Thanos does not seem to have any genuine friendships or close confidants, mainly interacting with beings under his thrall and command, along with those he deems his children. For a while, he was often accompanied by a high-ranking servant referred to as the Other, an individual who spoke for his master and was able to issue threats on Thanos’ behalf. The Other seemingly enjoyed a position that allowed him to deliver unfortunate news to his master without apparent punishment, though Thanos also expressed no displeasure at his demise.

The assassin Gamora and warrior Nebula are raised as Thanos’ daughters after their respective races are targeted by the Titan. While Thanos seems dismissive towards Nebula, expressing no qualms about torturing her, he believes he truly loves Gamora, hoping she will one day succeed him as ruler. Eventually, both women break away from his abusive rearing to make their own way in the universe and become his opponents. The Kree warlord Ronan the Accuser also initially does Thanos’ bidding in the search for the Orb, but when Ronan realizes its true power, he begins to act on his own to claim it for himself.

Error

During his push to acquire the Infinity Stones, Thanos commands a powerful foursome of galactic assassins: Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, and Cull Obsidian, referred to as the Children of Thanos—to do his bidding across the galaxies. Totally devoted to their master, they hold an almost religious fervor in serving Thanos and aiding him in gathering the Stones. When Thanos learns of Maw’s death, he expresses some regret over the loss.
